Control your emotions
“In order that you may not be sad over matters that you fail to get,
nor rejoice because of that which has been given to you.”
(Surah 57. al-Hadid, Verse -23)
Dear brothers and sisters,
Human beings have two kinds of emotions, one is joy and the other is sadness. When we achieve something wonderful in this world, we become very happy; and when we lose something important, we become sad. To be so much happy or to be too much sad, both are harmful. Because sometimes happiness makes people arrogant and sadness makes people frustrated. To be arrogant or frustrated both are prohibited by Allah.
It?s true that emotions are a vital part of our everyday lives. But one should control his or her emotions. When a person becomes angry, he flares up, threatens others, loses all self-control, and surpasses the boundaries of justice and balance. Meanwhile, if he becomes happy, he is in a state of rapture and wildness. In his intoxication of joy, he forgets himself and surpasses the bounds of modesty. In a hadith the Prophet said: “Verily, I have been prohibited from emitting two foolish and wicked sounds, one that is emitted when something favorable happens, and the other that is expressed when calamity strikes.”
Now the most important question is – How can we control our emotions? We mentioned above that emotions flare up for two reasons: either for joy or for inner pain. Joy and pain both come from Allah. When happiness comes in our life, we should not act arrogantly, but only express gratitude to Allah. And when sadness comes in our life, we should not be frustrated, but only depend on Allah. When we control our emotions both in joyful and the calamitous occasion, we can achieve peace and tranquility, happiness and comfort, and the taste of triumph over our own self. To be a perfect human we should control our emotions by following the middle path in times of both joy and sorrow.
