Are You Living for Grades, or Building a Future? -H. M ARAFAT
An alarm rings. You press snooze once, twice, thrice or maybe five times. Then, almost by instinct, you reach for your phone. A quick scroll through notifications and short videos turns into thirty minutes of lost time. Suddenly, reality hits. You have classes to attend, assignments to finish, and exams to chase. This routine feels “normal” because everyone is doing it. But here is the real question: Are you steering your life, or is the chaos of life steering you?
Most students believe their ultimate goal is a perfect grade. While grades are important, they are the keys that unlock doors, building your entire identity on a number is like building a house on shifting sand.
Ask yourself something deeper: If exams vanished tomorrow, would your curiosity survive? Would you still read to understand? Would you still study to grow? Or would your pursuit of knowledge simply evaporate? The truth is, many aren’t studying for wisdom; they are studying out of fear. Fear of failure, fear of disappointing parents, or the fear of being “left behind”. But fear is a fragile architect. Only a sense of purpose can build a future that lasts.
You are currently in the most transformative phase of your life. College and University are about more than just mastering textbooks; they are about forging your character, your discipline, and your inner compass. Every small, quiet choice you make is a vote for the person you are becoming.
Studying despite exhaustion builds grit. When you choose honesty over an easy shortcut, you are building integrity. These quiet victories carry far more weight in the real world than a single letter on a transcript. Remember, discipline creates motivation, not the other way around.
Success isn’t a loud, dramatic explosion. It is built in the silence of one focused hour, one extra effort, and one moment of self-control when everything in you wants to quit. But we live in a world designed to keep you distracted. Your attention is a commodity. Social media steals your hours; comparison with “filtered” lives steals your peace, leading to feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt about your own abilities and achievements. You start to feel like you aren’t “smart enough” or “talented enough.” Therefore, the truth is you are not behind. You are just distracted. Imagine if you protected your focus like a precious treasure. Imagine if you stopped waiting for the “perfect mood” and simply started.
Growth is often uncomfortable. It can feel slow and, at times, incredibly lonely. But that discomfort is the only proof that you are evolving. Five years from now, you won’t regret the nights you worked hard or the risks you took to improve yourself. You will, however, regret the hours you surrendered to comfort.
Always keep this in mind: Failure is not the enemy. Comfort is. It keeps you scrolling when you should be studying. It keeps you silent when you should be asking questions. It keeps you feeling “average” even though you were born for excellence.
The world doesn’t need more people who can simply memorise and repeat. It needs young people who can think critically, lead with empathy, and create with passion. You are not “just a student”. You are a future healer, a builder, an innovator, or a leader. That future version of you is being sculpted right now, in the mundane moments of today.
So, ask yourself: Are you just surviving the semester, or are you preparing for life? Choose wisely. One day, you will either thank yourself or wish you had tried just a little bit harder. The world already has enough dreamers; it is waiting for the doers. Don’t trade your future for thirty minutes of scrolling; the world doesn’t pay for potential, it pays for performance. Wake up before your dreams do.
