A Palestinian doctor and his heartfelt quote -RafiaTasnim Raisa
Mahmoud Abu Nujaila, was a Palestinian human rights defender, medical doctor, and humanitarian healthcare worker with Doctors Without Borders/Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF).
He had written on a hospital whiteboard used for planning surgeries: “Whoever stays until the end, will tell the story. We did what we could. Remember us.”
They all have the immediate right to be remembered in the hearts of the believers, in duas, in every upbringing and in every incident. Because they’re not numbers, but a part of our existence. This belief is what led me to dare carry forward Mahmoud abu nujaila’s words in the form of a poem. May Allah accept it.
“Whoever stays until the end
will tell the story.
We did what we could.
Remember us.”
We have fought
with every storm’s eye
We have witnessed
from the depths to the sky.
Remember us.
Remember us
We too once lived and loved,
Used to see hopes
Before they turned to dust.
Remember us in every wall
faded with dark blood,
where our lucid dreams
were ruthlessly murdered.
In the silence deep
our childhood laughs,
Dance unseen
Messing with the air.
Remember us.
In every grenade
We sprout flowers,
Remember us!
We were the real owners.
If you can return after the last
Spark of flames,
Remember us!
Call, shout
Each of our names.
Until then, claim us-
Claim us as your shining star,
one that will ignite
A near and coming revival.
“Whoever stays until the end
will tell the story.
We did what we could
Remember us.”
On November 21, 2023, Nujaila was killed in an Israeli air strike on Al Awda Hospital, along with two other doctors and human rights defenders.
According to FLD (Front Line Defenders): “During the 2023 Israeli hostilities in Gaza, he was on the front lines, treating the wounded and injured, risking his life in an extremely hostile situation.”
May Allah accept his sacrifices, struggles, and shahadah, along with those of all others. May we strive to honor his heartfelt and painful plea to remember them and to do all we can for Palestine.
