The Secret of Wise Muslims

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Part of the perfection of one’s Islam is his leaving that which does not concern him.” (Sunan al-Tirmidhī, Hadith – 2318)

Have you ever become so interested in what someone else was doing that you forgot about your own work? Maybe you wanted to know what two friends were talking about, or perhaps you were curious about a rumor spreading around. While curiosity is natural, Islam teaches us that not everything deserves our attention.
In this beautiful hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) teaches us an important secret of a strong Muslim. A believer focuses on what is useful and beneficial and stays away from things that do not concern him. This helps a person protect his time, thoughts, and energy.
Think of your mind as a backpack. If you fill it with unnecessary worries, gossip, and other people’s problems, it becomes heavy. But if you carry only what is important, your journey becomes much easier. In the same way, a Muslim should focus on pleasing Allah, learning good things, helping others, and improving himself.
One way to practice this hadith is through haya’—modesty and humility. A person with haya’ does not try to know everyone’s secrets or interfere in matters that are not his concern. Instead, he remembers that Allah is always watching him.
Another way is to be careful with our speech. Prophet Luqman was once asked how he became so respected among people. He replied: “Truthful speech, and long silence upon what does not concern me.”
Sometimes, saying less is wiser than saying more.
This hadith also teaches us to value our time. The great scholar Al-Hasan al-Basri said: “You are nothing but a compilation of breaths.”
Every breath brings us closer to the end of our lives. That is why we should spend our time on things that truly matter.
Allah says: “Most of their discussions do not contain any good, except of the one who enjoins charity or goodness or peace-making among people.” (4:114)
A wise Muslim does not need to know everything. Instead, he focuses on what benefits him in this life and the next. That is one of the signs of beautiful and complete Islam.
