The First Step Begins Within
“Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves.” (Surah 13.Ar-Rad, Verse – 11)
This powerful verse reminds us of a simple but life-changing truth: lasting change begins inside the human heart, not outside in the world around us.
Allah, in His perfect wisdom and justice, does not transform the situation of a people—from ease to hardship or from hardship to relief—until they themselves make an effort to change what is within them. This means that waiting for others to fix our problems or for circumstances to magically improve is not the path of success. Real progress begins when a person takes responsibility for their own thoughts, habits, and actions.
Many people wish to improve the world but forget to improve themselves. Yet, the Qur’an gently redirects our attention inward. The greatest transformation always starts with the self.
The famous poet Mawlana Jalaluddin Rumi beautifully captured this idea when he said: “Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.”
His words remind us that wisdom is not found in trying to control everything outside us, but in refining what lies within us. When a person improves his character, his patience, his honesty, and his connection with Allah, his environment naturally begins to change as well.
It is important to understand that self-change should never be driven by fear of people’s opinions. Rather, it should come from a sincere desire to become better in the sight of Allah. That is the truest form of growth.
Life also teaches us another important lesson: there are two paths to peace. Either we change our situation, or we change how we respond to it. If something harmful can be changed, we should work to correct it. But if it cannot be changed, then we must adjust our attitude and respond with patience and wisdom.
Trying to force change in others often leads to conflict. But changing oneself is an act of sincerity, humility, and love. It is the beginning of true transformation.
So the journey of change does not start in the world outside. It starts with a single decision within the heart: “I will begin with myself.”
