Avoiding the Useless: A Sign of True Faith
Prophet Muhammad (saw) says, “Indeed among the excellence of a person’s Islam is that he leaves what does not concern him.”
(Tirmidhi, Zuhd, 11; Muwatta, Husn al-Khulq, 1)
Our noble religion, Islam, encourages us to engage in beneficial, meaningful, and virtuous activities throughout our lives. It teaches us to speak truthfully and to choose the best and most constructive words. At the same time, it warns us against becoming involved in pointless matters that waste our time and energy and bring no benefit in this world or in the Hereafter.
The blessings and abilities that Allah (swt) has granted us are too valuable to be spent on useless pursuits. A mindful believer understands this and therefore avoids affairs that do not benefit either himself or others. Such people do not give importance to baseless talk or unnecessary thoughts. Instead, they use their minds and hearts for righteous deeds and for actions that earn the pleasure of Allah (swt).
The Holy Qur’an describes one of the qualities of successful believers as their ability to stay away from vain and purposeless matters. A productive life is therefore an important habit for every Muslim to cultivate. When a believer lives with purpose, it becomes easier to fulfill religious responsibilities and manage time wisely, ensuring that acts of worship, including the daily prayers, are performed properly and punctually.
Let us, therefore, strive to perfect our faith through our words, thoughts, conscience, and character. We should remember that the more we distance ourselves from useless activities, the more refined our faith becomes and the more valuable our servitude to Allah (swt) will be in His sight. Indeed, fortunate are those who remain so busy correcting their own shortcomings that they find no time to dwell on the faults of others.
