The Essence of the Holy Qur’an
Nurturing the Mercy Within Our Homes
“And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquillity in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed, in that are signs for a people who give thought.”
(Al Quran, Rum, 30/21)
One of the most beautiful blessings granted by our Lord is the family. From the moment we open our eyes to this world, it is family that surrounds us with care. It shelters us, nurtures us, and holds us close. A family is a sacred trust, sustained by the mercy of our Lord and adorned with the gifts of children and lawful sustenance. Within the family, we discover peace and experience a deep sense of safety. It is through sharing that affection grows, joy multiplies, and life gains meaning. The family is a school of character where loyalty blends with selflessness, faith with kindness, knowledge with wisdom, and love with respect. Truly, family is our most precious treasure and an irreplaceable wealth.
For a family to flourish, mutual understanding must prevail. Happiness and sorrow, ease and hardship, should be shared together. Cooperation and solidarity are essential among its members. Each individual must act with responsibility and sincerity. Decisions should be made through consultation, and everyone should consider the needs of others before their own. When this spirit is upheld, divine mercy descends upon the household, and love and attachment become lasting.
Parents, in particular, carry a great responsibility. They must treat one another and their children with justice and fairness, without discrimination. As the hadith reminds us, “Be afraid of Allah, and be just to your children.” Parents must remain mindful of their duties and never neglect those entrusted to their care. The warning of the Prophet (peace be upon him) is clear: “It is sufficient sin for a man that he neglects him whom he maintains.” Such guidance calls us to vigilance and compassion within our homes.
Therefore, let us safeguard the families that our Lord has entrusted to us. Let us handle this blessing with gentleness and gratitude. Let us draw closer to our parents, spouses, and children, and cherish the bond that unites us. Above all, let us remember that protecting our families from moral and material harm is among our greatest responsibilities.
