In the light of the Holy Hadith
Living with Gratitude and Restraint
Prophet s.a.w said: “Eat, drink, clothe and give alms without arrogance and extravagance.”
(Bukhari, Dress, 1; Nasa’i, Zakat, 66).
One day, our Beloved Prophet (s.a.w.) visited his noble companion Sa‘d ibn Abi Waqqas while he was performing ablution. Noticing that Sa‘d was using more water than necessary, the Prophet (s.a.w.) asked, “What is this extravagance?” Sa‘d replied, “Can there be any extravagance in ablution?” The Prophet (s.a.w.) answered, “Yes, even if you are on the bank of a flowing river.”
This simple yet powerful lesson teaches that wastefulness has no place in a believer’s life. Today, extravagance has become one of the great moral challenges of our time. While millions suffer from hunger and poverty, unnecessary spending and careless waste reflect a serious lack of responsibility and compassion.
Modern society often promotes the idea that greater wealth and higher consumption bring greater worth. Luxury and display are praised, and people are measured by what they own. In this pursuit, many forget their spiritual purpose and lose balance in life.
However, our Almighty Lord instructs:
“And [they are] those who, when they spend, do so not excessively or sparingly but are ever, between that, [justly] moderate.” Likewise, the Prophet (s.a.w.) advised, “Eat, drink, clothe and give alms without arrogance and extravagance.”
Let us value every blessing granted to us. Let us avoid excess in our food, water, clothing, and spending. Let us protect our resources and remember that we will be accountable for how we use them. Blessings are limited, even if our desires are not. True honor lies in gratitude, moderation, and mindful living.
