Dear Friends,
Assalamu Alaikum. Hope you are in peace and strength during these transformative times.
The July Uprising of 2024 will forever be remembered as a watershed moment in Bangladesh’s political history. It was not just a protest—it was a reckoning. People from all walks of life rose against decades of authoritarian grip, demanding dignity, justice, and the return of true democracy. The price of this awakening was steep: blood, tears, and lives lost.
Among the martyrs was Sabbir Hossain, a university student shot in Shahbagh while live-streaming the protests. Tahmina Yasmin, a schoolteacher in Narayanganj, was beaten in custody for speaking out. Maulana Abdur Rahman of Sylhet was killed during a peaceful prayer march. Abdullah from Jashore was shot and killed and was honoured by Jashore University of Science and Technology. Their sacrifice shattered the illusion of invincibility surrounding the Hasina regime and ignited nationwide resistance.
Their contribution to the fall of Hasina lies not only in their deaths but in what their courage inspired. Their stories spread like wildfire, galvanising civil servants, students, and even elements within the state machinery to break ranks with tyranny. Under immense pressure—international and internal—the regime crumbled.
Today, a fragile transition is underway. But the dreams of the martyrs must guide us forward. Their legacy demands accountability, constitutional rule, and an end to repression in all forms.
Let the martyrs of July be remembered not in mourning, but in our resolve to build a just, inclusive, and democratic Bangladesh. Hope to return to you next month with new stories.
