Current world hinges on Nobel and other laureates – Ifrith Islam
It is been 118 years.
About 950 people and organizations were awarded over these past years and these Nobel laureates are impacting the current world order.
About 919 individuals and 24 organizations were fanatical enough to achieve this highest prize of their hard work.
About 597 awards were rewarded through some boring name calling at press conferences. It is weird though. But not that much weirdness is included here because these weird things are the ones that makes Nobel Prize as one of the most valuable prizes of all.
The ranking of the list is first place.
Not all can achieve such prize as it is only give to those who are worthy of it. But it is not difficult to achieve it, if only you can make up something which ridiculously educational and it did not exist before- then you can top the list as the craziest scientist in the world.
Of course, there some catch… some great achievements may come handy for you to go through the microscopic brilliant eyes of the Nobel committee.
As far as the history goes, people had done many crazy things over the years of their lives. Then about hundred years back, there was a man who was included in the list of famous-ness.
ALFRED NOBEL is the man who willed it to establish some that will be helpful to the man kind. The inventor of Dynamite. He was altogether a businessman, chemist, engineer, inventor and philanthropist.
You know dynamite, right?
A dynamite is an explosive made of nitroglycerin, sorbents and stabilizers. A Swedish chemist and engineer named Alfred Bernhard Nobel who patented it in 1867. It became popular as an innovative creation more rapidly and this was because dynamite is more powerful and can be used as alternative to black powder.
A jelly-like more powerful substance was made using nitroglycerin with various nitrocellulose compounds named Blasting Gelatine or Gelignite and was patented in 1876. This compounded explosive was more powerful than dynamite. A subsidiary creation was included too and it was Ballistite- a precursor of many smokeless power explosives.
Ballistite is also used as rocket propellant.
Well, it‘s given, right? During his lifetime, Alfred Nobel held 355 patents.
Wow!!! What a talented guy!!!!
There is an interesting story about Mr. Nobel death. In 1888, Alfred’s elder brother died and mistakenly the world though Alfred died and hence, one French newspaper printed a premature obituary of Alfred Bernhard Nobel, ‘The merchant of death is dead’. Then Alfred though that the world would remember him through his work and many more things.
As a businessman, Alfred Nobel profited a lot at that time without any help from his family business. Especially, his incredible invention, that is, dynamite was enough to bloom his business like mushroom. As a result, his total amount of asset is unbelievably huge.
Alfred Nobel donated most of his asset in name of good work. It was about 31 million SEK at that time, now it is about 265 million dollars to fund, and hence, the birth of Nobel Prize. Nobel himself was a Swedish, so Swedish and Norwegian institutions awards the prize in recognition of academic, cultural or scientific advances- Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Literature, Peace and Physiology or medicine.
In 2019, it is going to be held the 100th Nobel Prize Ceremony on 10th December.
Ever since the beginning of the Nobel Prize, people have been receiving and receiving whenever they have done a logical good work for the world.
People, what do you think of a world that does not use fossil fuel?
A fossil fuel-free world.
Interesting, right?
The title goes like ‘for the development of lithium-ion batteries’. John Goodenough, M. Stanley Whittingham and Akira Yoshino are names of those eccentric scientists who worked hard to make this world free of air and water pollution as fossil burns and produces toxics and causes global warming. This research won the Nobel Prize in the category of chemistry.
Can you imagine yourself as Laureate? What will you feel?
Imagine.
Well, there is a Nobel Laureate who loves to imagine, named Olga Tokarczuk. She is a Polish author. Literature is her field of work and she marvels at it. Therefore, her marvelous work, ‘for a narrative imagination that with encyclopedic passion represents the crossing of boundaries as a form of life’.
Oh! There is another author who is Austrian named Peter Hanke and his work, ‘for an influential work that with linguistic ingenuity has explored the periphery and the specificity of human experience’.
Peace is something that is needed urgently to this chaotic world. But who cares… people become ignorant. It was there before you and I was born. It is there now as well. Our young generation are becoming more and more ignorant day by day. The importance of being cared for is almost gone.
But if you look closely, there are few who look out for others and one person was highlighted as a peace maker.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali has been recognized for his work to promote reconciliation, solidarity and social justice. He won Nobel Peace Prize for his hard work in this year, 2019. This PM is first Ethiopian who would be awarded. Abiy’s reformation has given many citizen hope for a better life and brighter future and this what Norwegian Nobel Committee believes.
How much do you know about economics?
I will tell you a secret, I don’t know much about economics, let alone Economic Science.
‘An experimental approach to alleviating global poverty’
It is the title given by the Laureates-Abhijit Banerjee, Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer. They have reshaped the research in development economics which already helped in alleviating global poverty and has great potential to further improve the lives of the most impoverished people on the planet.
I forgot something. Oh no.
What happened to physics?
Nobel devoted himself in the line of engineering which is branch of physics with a little further specific study.
Right?
Someone has won this year’s Nobel Prize.
Actually, there are three people who won.
James Peebles, Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz are ones. Their research topics are- ‘contributions to our understanding of the evolution of the universe and Earth’s place in the cosmos’ and ‘the discovery of an exoplanet orbiting a solar-type star’.
Did you understand any of those? Well, I did not because I cannot think beyond my table and chair. Though it’s not my field to understand and also it is not beyond my understanding but it is quite difficult.
Don’t you think?
It’s awesome.
Have you ever wondered about your oxygen level?
Can you sense it?
In the category of physiology or medicine, ‘how cell sense and adapt to oxygen’by Willian G Kaelin Jr., Sir Peter J. Ratcliffe and Gregg L. Semenza.
After a century, it is quite a long time since 1901.
Now let’s talk about 1901.
What was first award like?
I wondered myself. It happened way before you and I was born.
Now it’s more like ancient history.
1901
The first people who won the Nobel Prize.
Mr. Nobel himself did not receive any Nobel Prize. Then he would have been the first person ever with a record number prizes in short period of time. It would have been quite few from the 355 patents.
The very first Nobel Prizes Physics
Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen’s work won Nobel Prize in physics. The research work was, ‘the discovery of the remarkable rays’.
Chemistry
The first chemist who won Nobel Prize at the very beginning of this Prize was JacobusHenricusvan’t Hoff and his work was, ‘the discovery of the laws of chemical dynamics and osmotic pressure in solutions’
Physiology or Medicine
Emil Adolf von Behring was the first scientist who was awarded the Nobel Prize.
His work was, ‘serum therapy, especially its application against diphtheria’. As a result, he opened a door to a new way in the domain of medical science and thereby placed in the hands of the physician a victorious weapon against illness and deaths.
Nobel Peace Prize
Jean henry Dunant and Frederic Passy were recognized as the first peace makers to win Nobel Prize.
Literature
Sully Prudhomme. He was the first Literature Laureate.
His poetic composition was remarkable. Hence, he worked on his, ‘poetic composition, which gives evidence of lofty idealism, artistic perfection and a rare combination of the qualities of both heart and intellect’.
Now, let’s talk about some little different parts of Nobel Prize.
Do you thought the first woman who received Nobel Prize?
Can you guess?
Let me tell you…
Marie Curie. Ring any bell. Have you ever wondered how many woman were there to Nobel Prize?
Well, during the 100 years of Nobel Prize only 53 women in total won Nobel Prizes. Marie Curies was the very first woman to Nobel Prize as well as she won two Nobel Prizes- one, in the category of physics and it happened in 1903 and another in the category of chemistry in 1911.
So, what do you think?
Can you win a Nobel Prize for Bangladesh in the coming years? Can you fix the problems of the current world which hinges on Nobel and other prize laureates.
Hope you will win.
